The text comes in around 9 p.m. The foster puppy that was bouncing off the walls yesterday is now lethargic, won't eat, and just had bloody diarrhea on the kitchen floor. Your stomach drops, because you already know what it probably is. A SNAP test the next morning confirms it: canine parvovirus.
A brick-and-mortar shelter has one building to lock down. A foster-based rescue has a dozen kitchen floors, a transport van, a supply closet everyone digs through, and volunteers who pet three litters in an afternoon. Parvo doesn't respect any of that. It's a tough, unenveloped virus that spreads through direct contact and on anything that touches infected feces, and it can survive in the environment for months, sometimes more than a year, depending on conditions.12 One positive puppy means your whole network just got exposed, and the next 48 hours decide whether this ends at one dog or rips through your program during kitten-and-puppy season.
Here's how to contain it.
Understand What You're Actually Racing
Two numbers drive every decision you're about to make.
First, the incubation window. Dogs typically show signs 2 to 14 days after exposure, most often 4 to 7 days.2 So a dog that looks perfectly fine today can absolutely be infected. "He seems healthy" is not evidence of anything yet.
Second, shedding. Infected dogs start shedding virus in their feces a few days before they look sick, and keep shedding for up to roughly two weeks after they recover.2 That means the positive puppy was contaminating your foster home, and possibly the adoption event you took it to, before anyone knew. Trace backward, not just forward.
Puppies under five months and unvaccinated adults are the ones who get sick and die; a fully vaccinated adult is at much lower risk.2 But vaccination status does not tell you who is safe to ignore, because an exposed vaccinated dog can still carry virus on its body and in its environment to the next vulnerable animal.
Hour One: Isolate and Stop the Movement
Before you clean anything, freeze the situation.
Keep the sick dog in one room with hard, cleanable surfaces, and keep that dog's foster household away from every other animal in the program. Then send one message to your whole network: no transfers, no swaps, no "can someone cover this litter," no adoption events, no playdates. Movement is how a single case becomes an outbreak, so the first thing you buy yourself is time by stopping it.3
Then categorize every dog in your care into three buckets, the same triage shelters use:3
- Infected — the confirmed case, plus any others now showing vomiting, diarrhea, or sudden lethargy.
- Exposed — anything that shared space, people, or equipment with the infected dog. In a foster network that often means the whole litter, the foster family's own dogs, and any dog transported in the same vehicle. If your biosecurity has been loose, assume the circle is wide.
- Unexposed — dogs with no plausible contact. Be honest and conservative here; when in doubt, treat a dog as exposed.
Write down which dog is in which bucket and why, with dates. You will need this in three days when someone asks whether the dog going to its adoption Saturday was exposed.
Get a Real Diagnosis, Not a Guess
Not every case of bloody diarrhea is parvo, and treating the wrong thing wastes time you don't have. The shelter standard is the in-house fecal ELISA (the SNAP test), which uses a fecal swab and gives results in 10 to 15 minutes.2
Two cautions worth knowing. A negative test early in the illness can be a false negative if the dog isn't shedding much virus yet, so a sick dog with a negative SNAP still gets isolated and retested.2 And a dog vaccinated with a modified-live parvo vaccine within the previous week can occasionally throw a false positive.2 If anything is ambiguous, your vet can confirm with a blood count or send-out PCR. The point is to know what you're fighting before you commit resources.
Treatment Can Happen in Foster, With a Vet Driving
The instinct is that parvo means days of hospitalization, and for severe cases it does. But with appropriate care the prognosis is generally good, and outpatient protocols — fluids under the skin, anti-nausea medication, antibiotics for secondary infection, pain control, and nutritional support — let many dogs recover in a foster home at a fraction of the cost.2 There's also a recently approved monoclonal antibody treatment that can shorten the course of illness.2
The non-negotiable is that a veterinarian writes and supervises the protocol, and the foster caregiver is trained in biosecurity before the dog ever comes home: gloves, dedicated clothing or a smock, and a real disinfection routine.2 An untrained foster doing outpatient parvo care is how the virus walks out the front door to the next dog.
Disinfect Like the Virus Is Hard to Kill, Because It Is
This is where good intentions fail. Most household and even many veterinary disinfectants do not reliably kill parvovirus. The ones that do are dilute bleach (roughly 1 part bleach to 32 parts water), accelerated hydrogen peroxide (Rescue/Accel), potassium peroxymonosulfate (Trifectant), and calcium hypochlorite.14
Two rules make them actually work:
- Clean first, then disinfect. Organic material — feces, vomit, blood — inactivates disinfectant. Physically remove the mess and wash the surface with detergent before you apply the disinfectant.1
- Respect contact time. The surface has to stay wet with disinfectant for the full dwell time, generally around 10 minutes, before you rinse.1 A quick spray-and-wipe does almost nothing.
Some practical specifics for a home setting. Discard heavily soiled bedding and towels rather than trying to save them; launder anything else in hot water with a good detergent and machine-dry it.2 Use shoe covers or dedicated shoes for the sick dog's room, and skip foot baths entirely — they spread disease more than they stop it.2 Porous surfaces like carpet, soil, grass, and untreated wood essentially can't be disinfected, which is why the isolation room needs hard floors, and why a contaminated yard may be off-limits to vulnerable dogs for months.13
Vaccinate the Exposed, Immediately
Vaccination is the single most effective lever you have, and a delay of even a day raises the risk. Any unvaccinated exposed dog should get a modified-live parvo vaccine right away — it provides rapid protection. Puppies start at 4 weeks of age in an outbreak situation, with boosters every two weeks until 20 weeks old.2 Don't assume a dog is current; verify it against your records, and vaccinate anything you can't confirm.
Knowing You're Clear
A dog isn't "recovered" the day it stops vomiting. Once clinical signs resolve, your vet can run an ELISA to confirm the dog has stopped shedding virus, and the dog should get a bath before rejoining the wider population so it isn't carrying virus on its coat.2 Only then do you start lifting restrictions — and you keep watching exposed-but-healthy dogs through the full two-week incubation window before declaring the whole group in the clear.
Why Records Decide This
Parvo containment is a date problem. When was the puppy exposed, and when did signs start? Who else was in that foster home, that van, that event, and on what day? When was each exposed dog last vaccinated? When does each dog's two-week watch window close? Which one tested negative and needs a retest?
In a network spread across a dozen households, those answers cannot live in one volunteer's memory or a frantic group chat. You need one shared record per dog — vaccine dates, exposure date, test results, symptom timeline, quarantine start and end — that everyone is reading from. Parvo in a foster network is frightening precisely because it's invisible at first and durable in the environment. But it's containable. Freeze all movement, sort every dog into infected, exposed, or unexposed, confirm the diagnosis, treat under a vet's direction, disinfect with something that actually kills the virus and give it time to work, vaccinate the exposed without delay, and track every date in one place. Do that in the first 48 hours and you keep this to one sick puppy instead of a season-ending outbreak.
