A Foster Puppy Just Tested Positive for Parvo. Here's How to Contain It.

The text comes in around 9 p.m. The foster puppy that was bouncing off the walls yesterday is now lethargic, won't eat, and just had bloody diarrhea on the kitchen floor. Your stomach drops, because you already know what it probably is. A SNAP test the next morning confirms it: canine parvovirus.

A brick-and-mortar shelter has one building to lock down. A foster-based rescue has a dozen kitchen floors, a transport van, a supply closet everyone digs through, and volunteers who pet three litters in an afternoon. Parvo doesn't respect any of that. It's a tough, unenveloped virus that spreads through direct contact and on anything that touches infected feces, and it can survive on indoor surfaces for months and in the environment for up to a year, depending on conditions.123 One positive puppy means your whole network just got exposed, and the next 48 hours decide whether this ends at one dog or rips through your program during puppy season.

Here's how to contain it.

Understand What You're Actually Racing

Two numbers drive every decision you're about to make.

First, the incubation window. Dogs typically show signs 2 to 14 days after exposure, most often 4 to 7 days.2 Shelter data on naturally exposed dogs puts the usual window at 4 to 6 days with prolonged cases reported out to 14.4 So a dog that looks perfectly fine today can absolutely be infected. "He seems healthy" is not evidence of anything yet.

Second, shedding. Infected dogs start shedding virus in their feces three to four days after exposure — before they look sick — and keep shedding for up to roughly two weeks after they recover.24 That means the positive puppy was contaminating your foster home, and possibly the adoption event you took it to, before anyone knew. Trace backward, not just forward.

Puppies under five months and unvaccinated adults are the ones who get sick and die; a fully vaccinated adult is at much lower risk.2 But vaccination status does not tell you who is safe to ignore, because an exposed vaccinated dog can still carry virus on its body and in its environment to the next vulnerable animal.

Hour One: Isolate and Stop the Movement

Before you clean anything, freeze the situation.

Keep the sick dog in one room with hard, cleanable surfaces, and keep that dog's foster household away from every other animal in the program. Then send one message to your whole network: no transfers, no swaps, no "can someone cover this litter," no adoption events, no playdates. Movement is how a single case becomes an outbreak, so the first thing you buy yourself is time by stopping it.5

Then categorize every dog in your care into three buckets, the same triage shelters use:5

Write down which dog is in which bucket and why, with dates. You will need this in three days when someone asks whether the dog going to its adoption Saturday was exposed.

Get a Real Diagnosis, Not a Guess

Not every case of bloody diarrhea is parvo, and treating the wrong thing wastes time you don't have. The shelter standard is the in-house fecal ELISA (the SNAP test), which uses a fecal swab and gives results in 10 to 15 minutes.2

Two cautions worth knowing. A negative test early in the illness can be a false negative if the dog isn't shedding much virus yet, so a sick dog with a negative SNAP still gets isolated and retested.2 And a dog vaccinated with a modified-live parvo vaccine within the previous week can occasionally throw a false positive.2 If anything is ambiguous, your vet can confirm with a blood count or send-out PCR. The point is to know what you're fighting before you commit resources.

Quarantine the Exposed — and Check Them Twice a Day

The sick puppy's littermates and anyone who shared space with it are the next dominoes. They aren't sick yet, but they may be incubating.

Quarantine every exposed dog for a full 14 days from the last known exposure — the maximum incubation period — kept separate from your general population.64 During quarantine, check each dog twice daily for the earliest signs: a dip in appetite, low energy, the first soft stool.6 Any dog that shows signs moves straight to isolation. Twice-daily is not fussiness; parvo moves fast enough in a young puppy that a single missed morning is a meaningful delay.

Treatment Can Happen in Foster, With a Vet Driving

The instinct is that parvo means days of hospitalization, and for severe cases it does. Hospitalization with IV fluids remains the gold standard — but it can run several thousand dollars, which is exactly the bill that makes a small rescue hesitate to pull a sick puppy at all.

There is a real alternative. Outpatient protocols — fluids under the skin, anti-nausea medication, antibiotics for secondary infection, pain control, and nutritional support — let many dogs recover in a foster home at a fraction of the cost.2 A Colorado State University study of an outpatient protocol, using subcutaneous fluids and injectable medications managed at home after initial stabilization, found an 80% survival rate compared with 90% for hospitalized puppies.7 Lower, but nowhere near the outcome of skipping treatment, and affordable enough to change what your rescue can say yes to. There's also a recently approved monoclonal antibody treatment that can shorten the course of illness.2

The non-negotiable is that a veterinarian writes and supervises the protocol, and the foster caregiver is trained in biosecurity before the dog ever comes home: gloves, dedicated clothing or a smock, and a real disinfection routine.2 An untrained foster doing outpatient parvo care is how the virus walks out the front door to the next dog.

Disinfect Like the Virus Is Hard to Kill, Because It Is

This is where good intentions fail, and it usually fails for one specific reason.

Quaternary ammonium compounds — the "quat" cleaners most people reach for — do not reliably inactivate parvovirus. Independent studies have shown them ineffective against it despite years of label claims.8 Parvo is a non-enveloped virus, which is exactly the class quats are weakest against. If a quat is what's in your spray bottle, it has been giving you a false sense of safety.

What actually works:

Two rules make any of them work:

Some practical specifics for a home setting. Discard heavily soiled bedding and towels rather than trying to save them; launder anything else in hot water with a good detergent and machine-dry it.2 Use shoe covers or dedicated shoes for the sick dog's room, and skip foot baths entirely — they spread disease more than they stop it.2 Porous surfaces like carpet, soil, grass, and untreated wood essentially can't be disinfected, which is why the isolation room needs hard floors.15

Outdoors is a different problem. Bleach kills grass and is diluted by soil, so you cannot disinfect a yard. The practical answer is time and sunlight, which break the virus down over weeks to months, plus keeping unvaccinated and under-vaccinated dogs off the area until then.3

Vaccinate — On Intake, Not "Soon"

Vaccination is the single most effective lever you have, and a delay of even a day raises the risk.

The highest-impact habit is vaccinating every dog the moment it enters your care, before it goes anywhere. Intake vaccination works fast: a dog vaccinated against parvo on arrival can be substantially protected within three to four days, which is exactly the window that matters when you don't know what a new intake was exposed to before you got it.10 A vaccine given next week, after the dog has already sat in your intake area and moved to a foster, has missed the point.

In an active outbreak, any unvaccinated exposed dog should get a modified-live parvo vaccine right away. Puppies can start at 4 weeks of age in an outbreak situation, with boosters every two weeks until 20 weeks old.2 Don't assume a dog is current; verify it against your records, and vaccinate anything you can't confirm.

And know the difference between "vaccinated" and "protected." Outside an outbreak, the routine puppy series runs every three to four weeks from about six weeks of age until the puppy is at least sixteen weeks old, with the final dose landing around 14 to 16 weeks.11 Maternal antibodies interfere with the vaccine early on, which is why one shot is not enough. A puppy that has had "a parvo shot" at eight weeks is not protected — and this is the most common dangerous misunderstanding in foster-based rescue, because fosters and adopters hear "vaccinated" and relax. Until the series is complete, treat the puppy as susceptible: no dog parks, no pet stores, no shared yards with unknown dogs.

Knowing You're Clear

A dog isn't "recovered" the day it stops vomiting. Once clinical signs resolve, your vet can run an ELISA to confirm the dog has stopped shedding virus, and the dog should get a bath before rejoining the wider population so it isn't carrying virus on its coat.2 Only then do you start lifting restrictions — and you keep watching exposed-but-healthy dogs through the full two-week incubation window before declaring the whole group in the clear.

Why Records Decide This

Parvo containment is a date problem. When was the puppy exposed, and when did signs start? Who else was in that foster home, that van, that event, and on what day? When was each exposed dog last vaccinated, and how many doses into the series is it? When does each dog's 14-day watch window close? Which one tested negative and needs a retest? What did each twice-daily check actually show?

In a network spread across a dozen households, those answers cannot live in one volunteer's memory or a frantic group chat. You need one shared record per dog — vaccine dates, exposure date, test results, symptom timeline, quarantine start and end — that everyone is reading from. Confirm with a SNAP test, and retest a sick dog that comes back negative.2 Quarantine the exposed for a full 14 days from last contact, checking each dog twice daily.6 Treat under a vet's direction — outpatient protocols reach about 80% survival against 90% for hospitalization, at a fraction of the cost.7 Disinfect with 1:30–1:32 bleach, accelerated hydrogen peroxide or potassium peroxymonosulfate, on a cleaned surface, for a full 10 minutes — quats do not work.189 Outdoors, only time and sunlight clear it.3 Vaccinate on intake, not "soon": protection can arrive within three to four days.10 And know that a puppy with one shot at eight weeks is not protected — the series runs to at least 16 weeks.11 Track every date in one place, because the forgotten date is the puppy nobody quarantined.
